April was a strong month for Berkshire Bounty, with over 40,000 pounds of food collected and delivered, including a countywide distribution (see details below). With the coming of summer, we will see increased food provided by our gleaning activities as well as our relationship with local farms, including at the Great Barrington Farmers Market, and our farm partner, Berkshire Bounty Farm – where we have agreed to purchase their entire vegetable crop.
We partnered with Berkshire United Way to hold a countywide food distribution event on April 30th. Thanks go to Guido’s Fresh Marketplace for delivering $25,000 worth of nutritious food at cost, which was funded by Berkshire Bounty, October Mountain and an anonymous donor. Over 14,000 pounds of food were delivered to the food insecure population throughout Berkshire County. Countywide food distributions by local organizations are a rarity.
Working with Jewish Family Services, we continued to supply food to the Afghan refugee families that have been relocated to the Berkshires. We supply food on a bi-weekly basis to every family until the family can afford to buy food themselves.
Consistent with our approach to other volunteer efforts, the management of the Afghan refugee program has been downstreamed to the volunteers themselves. Our volunteers gain ownership of their routes and are fully invested in making the process run as smoothly as possible. We thank those volunteers, who have done an amazing job providing nutritious food to refugees who are making a difficult transition to a new home. We stand ready to provide similar assistance to additional Afghan families as well as Ukrainian refugee families if that need arises.
We are pleased to announce our receipt of:
- Two grants amounting to $20,000 from FEMA’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program, and, - A $25,000 grant from The Donald C. McGraw Foundation. These grants will be used to help fund our Food Purchase Program, which regularly purchases food from local food sources at discounted prices. It is a vital element in our efforts to provide nutritious food to those in need, and is budgeted at more than $200,000 worth of food during 2022.
Berkshire Bounty’s continued success in providing nutritious food to those in need is heavily dependent on the continued generosity of donors. Every donation is important regardless of amount. Help us help those in need by making a donation!
